The National Economic and Development Authority VI (NEDA VI) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology VI (DOST VI) conducted the Geoportal Administrators and User’s Training on July 18 to 22, 2022 at the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel, SM City Iloilo Complex.

Mr. Giovanni I. Maguddayao of NEDA Region II and Prof. Januel P. Floresca of Isabela State University served as the resource persons for the Geoportal Administrators Training (July 18 to 20) and the GIS Users’ Data Processing Training (July 21 to 22), respectively.

Ms. Cynthia C. Lumampao, OIC-Assistant Regional Director of NEDA VI, welcomed the participants of the Geoportal Administrator’s Training and highlighted the importance of GIS with a quote from Jack Daggermond, – the founder of the Environmental Systems Research Institute, – who said, “GIS is waking up the world to the power of geography and the science of integration which has a framework of shaping a better future.”

Mr. Maguddayao started the training of NEDA VI and DOST VI participants with a discussion on the geoportal administration of the server and tackled the installation of VMWare and Ubuntu Linux operating system as pre-requisite of Geonode, a web-based content management platform for maps.

DOST VI Regional Director, Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, via zoom, welcomed the attendees to the GIS Users’ Data Processing Training. Director Gelonga highlighted the need to strengthen the partnership and collaboration of all RGIN VI members for the success of the project.

Professor Floresca introduced the basics of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the hands-on activities such as overlaying, digitizing, and geo-referencing, as well as mapping of topography, flood, soil fertility, and crop using the ArcGIS and Google Earth Pro software programs. Sixty participants attended the training from the different Regional Line Agencies (RLAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), and State Colleges and Universities (SUCs).

The five-day activity ended with a message from NEDA VI OIC-Regional Director, Engr. Arecio A. Casing Jr. Director Casing who emphasized that the creation of the RGIN VI platform for maps will give way to a more efficient and effective generation, dissemination and sharing of geospatial data to strengthen policymaking and improve public service delivery.

The Regional GIS Information Network – Innovation Hub (RGIN-IH) started on January 17, 2022. It is being funded by DOST VI while the geoportal server is hosted by and administered at NEDA VI. (JADelfin/RGIN6)
