The Philippine Science High School (Western Visayas Campus) won the regional championship of the 2019 Western Visayas Junior High School Statistics Quiz conducted recently by the National Economic and Development Authority-Region VI in Iloilo City. PSHS bested 19 other schools from all over Western Visayas after getting 24 out of 30 questions correctly. The team included Elisha Eusebio, Maricris Mandario and James Martin Young, with their coaches Ms. Charmaigne Aguirre and Ms. Ma. Romy Alexis Consulta.
Iloilo Scholastic Academy finished second place, and the Iloilo National High School-Special Science Class came in close at third place after a clincher question in the final round.
The board of judges was composed of Dr. Rhodora A. Cartagena from the University of San Agustin, Prof. Vicente T. Balinas of the University of the Philippines Visayas and Ms.Cristyflor M. Escordial of the Central Philippine State University.
Winners will receive cash prizes, trophies and certificates of commendation during the National Statistics Month Closing Ceremony on October 30, 2019 at the West Visayas State University New Academic Building in La Paz, Iloilo City.
The contest is conducted yearly to develop appreciation of statistics among junior high school students and its use in development planning, monitoring and evaluation. It enables students to explore their skills on statistics and its application in other fields of interests, as well as, to recognize the efforts of the teachers/coaches in making statistics relevant to everyday life.
The Junior High School Statistics Quiz is one of the highlights of the National Statistics Month celebration in the region, in coordination with the University of the Philippines Visayas Statistical Society. (CPGaitana)
