Over 40 faculty researchers from both private and public higher education institutions in the region participated in the Retooling of Stakeholders on Research Protocols Training-Workshop with the Use of Statistical Software from June 20-22, 2016 at the NEDA-VI Jalaur Conference Room, Iloilo City.

The 2nd Batch of the Training-Workshop (the 1st Batch was conducted last October 2015) was in response to the need of faculty members who opt to engage in research activities, in consideration of the two-year vacuum of college students for SY 2016-2017 to SY 2017-2018 due to the K-12 reform.

“It is important that we remind ourselves to view research work for what it actually is – a critical planning input.  It should not be viewed only as a requirement ‘in partial fulfillment of’ or an output ‘for compliance’ and thus lose a valuable chance to produce quality work – work that can aid in nation-building,” emphasized NEDA-VI Regional Director Ro-Ann A. Bacal who gave the welcome message.

The activity was organized by the Development Research Division of NEDA-VI in partnership with the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics of the University of the Philippines Visayas, whose faculty members, who are experts in the field of research and mathematics, were tapped as resource persons.

Professor Ma. Elisa D. Baliao lectured on the research process, including the formulation of research problems and objectives, as well as, literature review and writing the hypotheses; Mr. Elfred John C. Abacan discussed data management and the description of data with the use of SPSS v.20; Professor Vicente T. Balinas and Professor Leah A. Araneta discussed the topics about inferences; and Mr. Daniel David M. Pamplona gave a lecture on linear regression analysis.

The three-day activity consisted of lectures and hands-on practical training using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, a user- friendly program that facilitates data management and statistical analyses. (CPGaitana/DRD)
